In honor and memory of "Grandad Crocombe"
Submitted by: Ruth Gatehouse

I spent quite a bit of time with you in the last 10 years of your life which happened to be the first 10 years of mine. We did beadwork together, read many stories and I was endlessly fascinated with your pipe and tobacco. We used to walk up the path together to visit Grandma in the infirmary and return by tea time when I knew it was time for me to go home. You never spoke of the Great War. All I knew then as a small girl, was that you had been " gassed by the Germans." It would take another 40+ years for me to find your war records and understand the sacrifices you made for our country. You went to the Western Front as a fit young man who only 3 years earlier as a 16 year old had emigrated to Australia on his own. You were medically discharged 3 years later with neurasthenia- shell shock or PTSD as we know it today. You were a broken man on your return, but I remember the lovely, attentive grandfather who paid for my music lessons and wanted the best for me. I admire and am thankful for you and all our ANZACS. Lest we forget, Ruth Gatehouse
