So help me god
Submitted by: Jenny May

to commemorate Anzac day I am sharing this poem that I wrote about my great uncle. He died on that fateful day at Gallipoli. The poem is part of a collection now held by the National Archives. I hope you enjoy it...

So help me god

Signed John Atkinson Metcalf

Egypt
Sun and
Duty called.

The day they sent a boy to god

He shined his boots
Sat nervously
Much whispering about

Checked his rifle
Bayonet
Helmet
and redoubt

Takes a deep and deeper breath

Back straight
Senses arched

Can hear battle
Sensations creep, pulsate and
Nauseate

From waves he marched
Tall and brave
Strong and Sure
With is mates n all

Soldiers True
black with gun fire
blue with cold

blue with death
on a sunlit beach

blue with death

buried there
somewhere there on that bloody beach

The cable read    With regret

Missing in action   Feared dead.

25th April 1915 at Gallipoli.
