Submitted by: Honouring Anzacs

John Joseph Shanahan was born in Murrurundi NSW and enlisted in Maitland on 25th January, 1916 at the age of twenty-three years and six months. He was a labourer at the time and single. He nominated his father John Shanahan from Blandford as his next of kin.

His physical information recorded at Rutherford Camp, East Maitland, New South Wales is as follows:
Height: five feet, eight and three-quarter inches,
Weight: one-hundred and thirty pounds,
Chest Measurement: thirty-three to thirty-five inches,
Complexion: "Fresh",
Eyes: Blue,
Hair: Brown,
Religion: Roman Catholic.

This tribute, which will continue to be updated, is dedicated by Earl Kelaher OAM, to his great Uncle, who was his Grandmother's brother. Earl as a young boy remembers his Uncle coming and staying at their place. His Uncle stayed single all his life and worked at the top of the Pages River out from Murrurundi.

"Uncle John was one of those Anzacs who never spoke about the War and in many ways just kept to himself on his return to Australia."
